IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF ENGINE REBUILDING • Lack of engine cleanliness

• Rough/imperfect bore entrance chamfers

• Burr on bottom of bore

• Poor cylinder bore finish

• Spiraling rings manually onto piston

• Excessive spreading rings manually onto piston

• Not using/improper use of ring compressor

• Piston damage – dents, groove damage

MANY THINGS ARE NOT REBUILDERS’ FAULT • Computers (bad calibration)

• Sensors (bad sensor)

• EGR valve (too much exhaust)

• Intake manifold (debris, leakage, runs hot)

THINGS TO REMEMBER DURING RING INSTALLATION • Insert rings squarely into the bore and measure end gap with feeler gauge

• Adjust gap if needed by filing both sides of gap equally

• Use ring expander tool to install rings on piston, so as not to deform ring—do not spiral on rings

• Install directional rings with the dot up (otherwise oil pumping may occur)

• Install 2.0mm 3-piece oil ring with expander points up to avoid catching in drain-back hole/slot in oil groove bottom

• Stagger location of end gaps on each ring 180 degrees apart

• Clean bores with hot soapy water and scrub brush; wipe with clean white rag to check for any residue

• Lightly oil cylinder walls and rings with regular non-synthetic motor oil

• Properly tighten ring compressor so rings don’t catch on edge of cylinder or pop out in bore (don’t force piston if it is hung up)

• Typical engine break-in: use conventional motor oil—change oil after first 3,0 miles/ 4,828 kilometers. Use only synthetic motor oil if originally specified by manufacturer

This handy ring install tool is inexpensive and easy to use. Just insert the ring ends in wedge jaws, expand ring gently, and slip into groove. Also ideal for removing rings easily, without damage.

Part #1723

Rpk, Rk, and Rvk have replaced Ra as the most important baselines of measuring bore finish. These present a much more defined description of the actual bore finish surface.

Bearing Ratio Curve (percent of material contact between cylinder wall and ring)

Definition of Roughness Characteristics by DIN EN ISO 13 565 (1998.04)

A Peak material volume A Area valley ratio R Core roughness depth R Reduced peak height R Reduced valley depth M Peak material ratio

M Valley material ratioRpk

Rk

Rvk

Reduced Peak Height (Rpk) The top portion of the surface, which will quickly be worn away when the engine begins to run

Core Roughness Depth (Rk) The long term running surface, which will influence the performance and life of the cylinder

Reduced Valley Depth (Rvk) The oil retaining capability of the deep troughs, which have been machined into the surface

General Applications: Good performance with good life Rpk: 8-12 micro-inch (<12 optimum) Rk: 25-35 micro-inch (25 optimum) Rvk: 40-50 micro-inch (40 optimum) Ra: 15-20 micro-inch and 12-23 allowable

Pro-Stock & NASCAR: Much smoother finish, much less life, but less friction Rpk: 3-5 micro-inch Rk: 12-18 micro-inch Rvk: 20-25 micro-inch

Oil Retention (valleys in bore surface) • Rvk has very strong correlation to oil consumption

• Excessive Rvk leads to high oil consumption and excessive ring rotation

• Insufficient Rvk can lead to excessive ring and bore wear

Cross Hatch Angle • Typical automotive application: 45° to each other (or 22°-32° to the horizontal deck surface)

• Cross hatch angle should be the same throughout the length of the cylinder and not flatten out at either end

• Nikasil® – Thermal Spray Bores – Hypereutectic Bores: 10°-15° Source: Cross Hatch Angle data provided by Sunnen Products Company

Standard Honing Practices Stock Removal • .0030" with 80-100 grit stone

– Bulk stock removal; produces deep valleys

• .0015" with 280-320 grit stone

– Prepares core roughness; regulates valley depth

• .0005" with 400-600 grit stone – Prepares plateau attributes

Finish • 320 grit abrasive filled nylon filament brush OR • 800 grit cork bond stone

– Removes surface defects left behind from honing

Standard Honing Practices Stock Removal • EHU412 150 grit stone

– Bulk stock removal; produces deep valleys

• .0020" with JHU623 280 grit stone

– Prepares core roughness; regulates valley depth

• .0003" with C30J95 500 grit stone

– These stones need to be cut down to 2.750" long

– Prepares plateau attributes

Rpk: < 10 micro-inch Rvk: 18-25 micro-inch

Cross hatch grooves irregularly spaced Causes: Varying reciprocation rates, poor stone breakdown with alternate loading and breakdown, stone grade too hard and/or grit too coarse Effect: Poor oil distribution, erratic break-in, poor oil economy

Wide, deep cross hatch grooves Causes: Stone grit too coarse, excessive stone pressure, poor stone break-down, insufficient lubricant Effect: Causes abnormal wear, excessive oil consumption, poor and variable break-in period

One directional cut Causes: Excessive play in hone components Effect: Causes rapid wear, poor seating, excessive ring rotation, lowers oil control

Low cross hatch angle Causes: Low reciprocation rate compared to RPM used Effects: High impact forces causing excessive wear, poor oil distribution, slower break-in of rings

Cross hatch groove folded and fragmented Causes: Stone grit too coarse and/or grade too soft, insufficient lubricant Effect: Causes scratching, high wear, raises ring temperatures, high and erratic oil consumption

Too little plateau Causes: Stone grit too coarse, insufficient stock removal per cut Effect: Excessive ring wear, high temperatures

Glazed plateau Causes: Excessive stone pressures, loaded stones (too hard a grade), insufficient lubricant Effect: Slows down seating-in and increases oil consumption

Excessive voids in cylinder wall Causes: Excessive stone pressures, loaded stones (too hard a grade), insufficient lubricant Effect: Increases oil consumption, rapid wear, reduces uniformity from engine to engine

BORE FINISH (continued)

2 PIECE VS 3 PIECE OIL RINGS

Cylinder Diameter

1.0" to 2.3624" 2.3625" to 2.9524" 2.9525" to 3.5424" 3.5425" to 4.3299" 4.30" to 5.1174" 5.1175" to 5.9049" 5.9050" to 6.89" 6.8900" to 8.9"

Ring Gap Tolerance

.006 to .014 .008 to .016 .010 to .020 .012 to .022 .014 to .026 .016 to .030 .020 to .035 .024 to .041

An important fact to remember is that these tolerances are rigidly adhered to by the manufacturers and that the ring gaps are inspected in gauges accurate to .0001" at the cylinder diameter for which the ring is manufactured. Any increase in the diameter of the cylinder the ring is being used in, over the designated size, results in an increase of approximately .003" in ring gap for each .001" increase in cylinder diameter.

2 Piece Oil Rings • Provide high axial durability in diesel engines

• The oil ring body oil return slots or drilled oil holes must be limited to maintain axial structure

• Cast iron oil rings require great care to prevent breakage during installation

• Steel bodied 2 piece oil rings have better conformability, and are very durable

3 Piece Oil Rings

• Excellent conformability even at low tensions compared to cast iron 2 piece oil rings

• Low friction for improved efficiency

• Easy to install / highly resistant to installation breakage

• Hastings’ Flex-Vent® designs are offered in a broad range of tensions for high performance engine applications
